Eton Rowing Courses Course Director

Eton College Summer Schools – Course Director, Rowing Courses Since their first year in 1990, the Eton Rowing Courses have aimed to introduce those who have not rowed before to as many aspects of the sport as possible, and to take those who are already committed to a higher level. Students progress through a variety of boats from single sculls to eights, and the coaches focus on developing the correct technique in an unparalleled rowing environment which caters for maximum enjoyment of the sport. The Courses make use of Eton’s various boathouses on the Thames, as well as the purpose-built course at Dorney Lake which served as the rowing venue for the London Olympic Games in 2012. The Rowing Courses are looking to appoint a new Course Director to be in place to run the July and August 2017 Summer Schools. The Course Director is responsible for the day to day logistics of the courses including; boat allocation for the rowing sessions, transport allocation, supervising mealtimes, organising and facilitating land based activities, communicating with parents and ensuring the safety and well-being of all pupils on the courses. The Course Director manages a team of eight well-qualified coaches, eight course assistants and one boatman. The Course Director is supported by two Assistant Course Directors, two senior members of staff who run the boarding houses as well as an assistant to help with the day to day administration. The role entails contact with Eton College throughout the academic year. Autumn term requires a wash-up meeting and reflection work, including processing the course questionnaires, and writing a full report for the College, in order to better inform the Courses for the next year. Spring term requires the Course Director to recruit and allocate continuing staff, interviewing both new and returning staff in line with Child Protection legislation. During the Courses the Course Director is the main point of contact for parents who have sent their child on the Course, as well as the main facilitator of all activities run by the Courses, as such, the Course Director is not able to coach on the Courses. A successful candidate with have experience of managing a team of people and, preferably, working in a school environment. The fun, energetic and relaxed ethos of the Courses must be maintained, without losing sight of the high standards of safety and behaviour. The Course Director plays a key role in attaining this balance and creating a positive working and learning environment. The Course Director is remunerated for a week of ‘set-up’ work prior to the courses, as well as the three weeks of the Courses. The role requires the Course Director to be able to visit the Summer Schools Office at Eton College throughout the year and to be on site at Eton for all three weeks of the Courses during the summer months.
